The protective effects from oxidative stress of fractions and rutin from Fagopyrum tataricum were evaluated. The treatment of n-hexane, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol fractions from F.tataricum showed over 90% scavenging effect against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) at 500¥ìg/ml. In addition, the fractions showed over 80% hydroxyl radical (¤ýOH) scavenging activity at the concentration of 50¥ìg/ml. Moreover, active compound, rutin, showed over 80% scavenging effect against DPPH at 50¥ìg/ml. ¤ýOH scavenging activity of rutin showed over 80% at 10¥ìg/ml. Furthermore, the protective effect against oxidative stress using C6 glioma cell was also studied. The treatment of H2O2 to C6 glioma cell induced oxidative stress, however the fractions from F. tataricum and rutin increased
significantly the cell viability. The present results indicate that the fractions from F. tataricum and active compound, rutin, showed protective effects against oxidative stress.
